“It is neither just nor human so to grind men down with excessive labor as to stupefy their minds and wear out their bodies.” — Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum (1891)
Pope Leo XIII saw the connection between dignity of work and dignity of the person. I believe this speaks also to our communities today: when laws, prejudice, or silence exhaust LGBTIQ people emotionally and spiritually, it “wears out the body and stupefies the mind.” Rest is a right. So is dignity. Faith calls us to protect both.
