Two Women Leading the Dicastery for Consecrated Life: A Sign of Continuity

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Sister Tiziana Merletti as Secretary of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. She will serve alongside Sister Simona Brambilla ( the first woman to head a dicastery of the Roman Curia, appointed by former Pope Francis in October 2023)

While this is not the first time a woman has held such a role in the Roman Curia, it remains uncommon: two religious women now entrusted together with the operational leadership of a Vatican office that serves thousands of religious communities worldwide.

It is a sign of continuity with the direction set by Pope Francis, who opened space for women’s participation in Church decision-making.

For those of us walking in the Church with vocations that are often questioned, seeing that diverse forms of responsibility are being consolidated is encouraging. The reform is not over. And this, too, is a way of saying the Church can listen, include, and entrust.
