“Any attack on the rights of queer people threatens the rights of all people who do not meet the narrow ideas of how to look and behave.”
On January 2025, Bishop Ludger Schepers of Essen, the queer representative of the German Bishops’ Conference, spoke out against the decision of U.S. President Donald Trump to revoke protections for queer individuals.
With the rollback of protections for queer individuals in the U.S., Schepers warns that the dignity of many is at stake. His stance is clear about what is our Christian duty: “The Church’s task is to support people on the margins of society and to take action against discrimination.”
Jesus walked with the outcast, defended the vulnerable, and called us to love without conditions. This is the Gospel in action. As followers of Christ, we must ask ourselves… are we standing with those in need, or are we silent when their dignity is denied?
